Example: the second bullet item recommends that I add fruit into my diet. I added a fruit cup (1 cup) which contained strawberries, blueberries, mango and pumpkin seeds; the bulleted alert did not clear.
I experienced this with my diary intake being too low as well. I added in Greek yogurt with pumpkin seeds; bulleted alert still appeared. Also, I have oatmilk in the AM with my protein shakes too.
So, I’m questioning the calibration of the app’s nutritional record keeping.
Then, just some general commentary: I love how light and small this is so I can just bring up upstairs or down to the kitchen without keeping it in the kitchen. I think if you're counting calories, just take into account the +/- 1 gram from whatever you're getting so you don't go over your daily limit. But all in all, it is pretty accurate. However, like I said in the video, I got the tablespoon/cups set from dollar tree, so I don't know which one is the more "accurate one". But when I filled the tablespoon up with the chips, which should be around 14.17 grams (on the bag on chips it says 1 tablespoon = 15 grams), the scale is accurate to +/- 1 gram . I highly recommend it at a price of around $10 just because it is so light and small you can practically bring it with you anywhere even in your sweatshirts pocket if you go to a social gathering! I remember a long time ago, the kitchen scale for calories used to be alot bigger and heavier. And then, for anyone curious about how much weight this scale can handle, it is up to 11 lbs. I put a huge orange on it and it worked. So, just a point of reference, a newborn baby weights between 5 lbs 8 ounces (2,500 grams) and 8 lbs 13 ounces (4000 grams), this scale weights up to 11 lbs (~5000 grams). So it can take quite a bit of weight. So you can literally put a newborn baby on it and get the weight. One thing to note is it doesn't go beyond to any decimal points. So you get 5 or 6 grams, but not 5.5 grams. You get 300 ml, but not 300.5 ml. You get 2 fl oz, but not 2.6 fl oz. If you're looking for that type of precision, this probably isn't for you. But basic calories counting, it is really good. (I got the "basic medium size one" that takes a weight of up to 11 lbs).
The weakness of any of these scales is the app that is used with them. I've got lots of experience with "smart" apps with Alexa connected to and operating everything possible in my home. What I've found is the more smart products a company powers the better their software team is at finding problems and restoring function after an issue with "the cloud". To get the necessary caloric values this app has to go through the cloud to a database for the info. The scale I purchased before this was a nice, accurate scale that had a network problem every time I opened the app. The sellers were nice folk that tried to be helpful but knew nothing about software and when communicating about the problem wasted my time asking stupid questions like I was an idiot.
I have been using this for a week and although I had trouble at first logging data I fooled around with it until i learned how to use it. I should have taken a star off for lack of clear instructions but am so pleased it actually works as advertised. I did reach out for help at first and got an email contact form that said they'd get back to me in a few days. So not 5 star support, but they did open a case and asked for more info so there is some support if necessary. A through YouTube video would be very helpful.
One of the most critical features is the ability to link with a fitness app to keep track of your progress.
The two major players here are Apple Health and Fitbit. I bought and wore a Fitbit last fall just for the purpose of tracking everything, but was disappointed at how very little was automatically tallied and that I had to constantly sync to keep it up to date.
I have been wearing a Samsung Galaxy watch for a few years and really like the Samsung Health app better than Fitbit or Google Fit. Unfortunately they are not a big enough player for many of these fitness trackers to link to.
Enter the Health Sync app. For free or a tiny fee if you don't want any ads, the Health Sync app seamlessly
moves data from Fitbit to Samsung Health, so all my fitness metrics are in one place.
One of the things I like about the Etekcity scale and VeSync app is the flexibility to remove all the clutter for the home screen. The app is really trying to help folks with weight loss by suggesting different diets like keto or Mediterranean but all that can be turned off and removed.
Another nice feature is so far everything I've looked up stays visible below the "look up food" window speeding up the discovery process.
Another thing I like is I put a plate on the scale then zero it out with the tare button, let's say weigh a slice of protein bread, but then once that's recorded can zero out the scale again, put some sugar free raspberry jam on the toast and weigh get the additional calories logged. First weigh the salad, then with the dressing etc.
The database is pretty extensive so far I've found something close to everything I've looked up.
On the Keto diet spent years treating a potato or tortilla chip like poison. I just read a study that said regardless of diet choices calories are the key. This tool should help me eat what I want but in small enough portions to lose a pound a week until I reach my target.
Now, I don't know about you, but I LOVE observing how people who work for companies in a support capacity do their jobs. And when I come across a person or staff that wows me, I stop and take notice! I also stop and take notice when I come across staff that has the opposite effect on me. And my follow through is just as thorough then as this review is now. The Etekcity Digital Kitchen Scale support team wowed me! Immediately they responded to my inquiry when my scale, which I had for a long time, stopped working one day. Like I told you, this thing works hard all day every day measuring food for a family of four. Well, their support team instructed me on how to troubleshoot what was the cause of the problem, offered to send me a new scale, which arrived quickly, AND the piece de resistance. Several weeks later, they reached out to me to ask me how the new scale was working. Talk about a customer support team! Now that's the kind of service I want all day every day!
So, if you're considering buying a food scale for yourself and/or your family, I highly recommend the Etekcity Digital Kitchen Scale. Not just because it's an amazing digital piece of machinery, but because the company has people, actual human beings who work there that care about the service they provide customers and it shows in the CRM (customer relationship management) system they very likely automated utilizing the beauty of digital technology to do it, but they also kept the human element present with their service, which gives them an extra edge.
This is my third Etekcity Digital Kitchen Scale! It's a machine. It isn't meant to last forever. All machines eventually stop working. There's an expected life for every machine. And when this machine serves me till it can't anymore, like the last 2 did, I'll gratefully whisper a thank you for your service to the people who made it and gladly buy another one. Year after year. Etekcity and their customer team now have a "raving fan", as one of my favorite teachers and mentors calls it! When you get yours, let me know if you become a raving fan of the Etekcity Digital Kitchen Scale too.
